By 2004, the costs of operating as a corporation and employing a full-time writer became prohibitive. The board of the Capitol Press Association arranged for the Insider State Government News Service to take over its day-to-day operations. Since 2004, the editor of the Insider — a daily newsletter covering policy and politics for the state’s government affairs community — has also served as the columnist and editor of the Capitol Press Association.
In June of 2017, political reporter Colin Campbell took over as Insider editor and columnist for the Capitol Press Association. Campbell has reported for The News & Observer of Raleigh since 2008. Before joining the paper’s political team in 2014, he covered Raleigh, Johnston County and Chapel Hill for the paper. He’s a graduate of the journalism school at UNC-Chapel Hill and a native of Charlottesville, Va.
Campbell is the sixth named editor in the Insider’s 24-year history, immediately following veteran journalist Mark Binker, who died in April 2017 shortly after moving to the Insider from WRAL News. In addition to Binker, earlier Capitol Press Association columnists include Pat Gannon (2014-16), Scott Mooneyham (2004-2014), and Paul O’Connor (1982-2004, with interim stints in 2014 and 2016-17).
